Popular songs as minimalist pictograms by graphic designer Viktor Hertz. Best thing since those pictogram flowcharts of famous lives and minimalist takes on classic fairy tales.

"Of course all life is a process of breaking down, but the blows that do the dramatic side of the work — the big sudden blows that come, or seem to come, from outside — the ones you remember and blame things on and, in moments of weakness, tell your friends about, don’t show their effect all at once. There is another sort of blow that comes from within — that you don’t feel until it’s too late to do anything about it, until you realize with finality that in some regard you will never be as good a man again. The first sort of breakage seems to happen quick — the second kind happens almost without your knowing it but is realized suddenly indeed."
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Crack Up

Hannah Forces Herself to Write Something Every Day (but fails on the second day); take 2

I play number games in my head to distract myself from thinking about you; the sevens times-tables, 19 factorial, counting backwards from 100 by 6’s. I do it Pavlov’s Dog style - the moment something reminds me of you I’m off. Even mouthing the numbers, maybe all the primes starting at 51. I’ve done it so many times these last few weeks I can’t always think of a new challenge quickly enough. Then I resort to reciting poetry in my head. I know some Robert Frost which is good cause he writes about boring things like roads and snow. Of course my favorite isMad Girl’s Love Songand trying to erase your face from my mind with lines likei think i made you up inside my headis even more of a fool’s errand then the rest of this silly nonsense. And it is. It’s all such a silly trick to pretend and pretend to be tricking myself into believing that these distractions don’t remind me of you.

I was supposed to be a twin but the other one didn’t make it. She didn’t “not make it” some time in the past 21 years – she “didn’t make it” even before I was born, if that changes things. By which I mean, maybe it explains why in reading this, you probably feel more for her than I ever have.
